Daily Rituals

During this trying time, daily rituals have become very important to me. I get up early in the morning, I’m usually awake by 5:30 in the morning. My brain just turns on, I can’t help it. I typically get the coffee going and while it is brewing I take time to go out into the garden and meditate and read something that inspires and focuses my day. I have started journaling and writing again. If something in the garden needs tending, I do it.

After that, it’s usually a little bite to eat and coffee, then out to the studio to start the day. I try to leave the studio in working order the night before (I say try… sometimes, well…) and get everything turned on and ready to go. Most of the time, I go over any lists that I’ve left myself and work that I started days ago to see where things stand and what is shouting at me the loudest to get done.

After that, I sort through anything need for tasks, whether that be reviewing source materials, gathering together paint and tools, or sketching and figuring out next moves on something. I try to keep everything that I need in a first-order of operations kind of organization so that I don’t get hung up playing treasure hunt for a particular scraper or tool that I need. Then, I dive in.
